Pickleball's Olympic Dreams: The Road to Inclusion

Pickleball was invented in 1965 and has been growing fast. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it even gained more popularity. There are now governing bodies for the sport. The International Pickleball Federation (IPF) is the world governing body, while the USA Pickleball (USAP/USAPA) is the governing body in the USA. Professional and amateur players can now join major pickleball tournaments hosted by the prominent tours in pickleball.

If you think about it, pickleball has come a long way. It may raise the question “Is pickleball an Olympic sport?”. The short answer is no. The longer answer is it will be soon.

In this blog, we will talk about:

What is the Olympics

The Olympics is a series of sports held every four years in different parts of the world, alternating between the Winter and Summer. It is considered the world’s most prestigious sports competition, bringing together athletes from around the world to compete against each other. There are currently 40 sports in the Olympics, 32 were included in the Paris Summer Olympics and 8 will be featured in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Olympics IOC

The Olympics is being managed by a governing body called the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are composed of 111 members who represent different countries. The IOC is located in Switzerland the current president is Thomas Bach.

The main role of the OIC is to oversee the Olympic Movement and Olympic Charter. However, it also has other roles to oversee such as:

  • Organizing the summer, winter, and youth Olympic games.
  • Overseeing the Olympic Movement and Olympic Charter.
  • Protecting the integrity of the Olympic Games.
  • Making sure that the Olympic Games are held in a safe and fair environment.

Olympic Movement

The Olympic Movement is an organization overseen by the OIC that is responsible for promoting Olympism. The goal of the Olympic movement is to build a peaceful and better world through Olympism. Olympism is the philosophy that promotes fair play, sportsmanship, and respect for others. Its symbol is the famous five rings, representing the unified five continents it covers (Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania).

Olympic Charter

The Olympic Charter is the set of rules implemented in the Olympics. It governs the Olympic Movement.

Is Pickleball an Olympic Sport?

There are other racket sports in the Olympics like tennis, table tennis, and squash. Isn’t it surprising that there is no pickleball in the Olympics considering its popularity? It’s continuously growing and becoming more and more popular, not just in the USA but also in other countries. It’s attracting more players that it has its own global governing body now.

Challenges to Include Pickleball in the Olympics

The answer to “Is pickleball an Olympic sport?” is no. Not yet, anyway. One of the main challenges in including pickleball in the Olympics is the competition from more established sports that have a long history of competing in the Olympics. Compared to other racket sports, pickleball is relatively new. That’s not the reason why there is no pickleball in the Olympics, though. Being popular alone isn’t enough for pickleball to be in the Olympics. There are requirements so the Olympics can include pickleball.

  • The sport has to have a governing body representing it.
  • It has to be played by men in at least 75 countries across 4 continents.
  • It has to be played by women in at least 40 countries across 3 continents.

Pickleball’s Progress and Future

According to the IFP website, there are currently 77 member countries, and more to come. The IFP is working hard to get pickleball in the Olympics. It is actively working to promote pickleball for it to grow more and gain support from athletes and fans.
